Kidepo Flying Safari - Kidepo Flying Tour - 3 days

This 3 Day Uganda Kidepo Flying safari -We will be flying to Kidepo Valley Naitonal Park, do game drives in Kidepo in search of the real Lion King Safari to Africa as it was 50 – 100 years – CNN has twice featured the park, once as the 3rd best Park in Africa and another time as one of Africa’s Featured Parks.

Uganda 3 days Kidepo Flying Safari for lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, etc (only departs on Wednesday and Fridays)

The 3-days Kidepo Flying Safari begins at Entebbe every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. We stay at Apoka Safari Lodge or Savannah Valley Lodge and base here for all the activities. The flight time to Kidepo Valley Park is less than two hours and certainly a lot less than the arduous drive one would have to go through getting here by road , beside you can see the wondrous Pearl of Africa from the air, minus the dust and bumps of the roads (though for many that is an adventure in itself).

Kidepo Valley National Park is the last original habitats of the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, also known as the Uganda giraffe. Kidepo hosts more than 50 species. From the very common yellow-billed kite, the pygmy falcon, fox kestrel and tawny eagle to the rare Verreaux’s eagle and the very rare Taita falcon. Several vulture species can be seen too.

Kidepo Valley Park, is authentic Africa, an African Wilderness that you will not find elsewhere in East Africa.  It is Africa without the crowds, where you have less than 10 new visitors a day enter the park, with limited lodges made up by the richness of the Africa Wilderness in this remote part of Uganda.

  • Day 1: Fly from Entebbe to Kidepo Valley National Park, enjoy an evening game drive in the Narus Valley.
  • Day 2: Kidepo Valley NP with Game drive in the park all day
  • Day 3:  Morning Game Drive, Fly back to Entebbe.- End of Fly Kidepo Safari.

Lunchtime at the lodge and you are served a culinary treat in the Ugandan Wild of Kidepo Valley National Park that will delight your senses and palate.  Even while you have lunch or sit on your veranda you will be able to enjoy some the abundant wildlife found at this most unusual, one of a kind Park in East Africa bordered by South-Sudan and Kenya – a park that abounds with scenic wonders and prolific wildlife, some of which is not found elsewhere in Uganda.

Relax after lunch, drinking in all the splendor of nature, the stillness of the wild only broken by the sound of an animal near or far – welcome to Kidepo Valley National Park.

Late Afternoon Game Drive through the Narus Valley where you will see herds of buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, zebras and hopefully some lions, leopard and the elusive cheetah.  Besides there are the many birds you might find along the way.  This is a slow drive so that you do not miss anything, stopping wherever you wish to take pictures of the fabulous wildlife and birds, fauna and flora along the way.

One of the things that you will readily see that one thing that makes this park so very different is that there are no other vehicles, it is African wildlife without the crowds.  Simply amazing – in this remote and unvisited part of Uganda’s Wild.

Enjoy the sunset and a delightful dinner at the lodge in the heart of Kidepo Valley National Park surrounded only by the sounds of the African Wild in the Bush.  There is nothing like going to sleep with the sounds of a roaring lion in the distance and awakening to the trumpeting of an elephant.

About Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is a 1,442 square kilometers (557 sq mi) national park in the Karamoja region in northeast Uganda. Kidepo is rugged savannah, dominated by the 2,750 metres (9,020 ft) Mount Morungole and transected by the Kidepo and Narus rivers.

The park is located approximately 520 kilometers (320 mi), by road, northeast of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city.

The northwestern boundary of the park runs along the international frontier with South Sudan

Gazetted as a national park in 1962, it has a profusion of big game and hosts over 77 mammal species as well as around 475 bird species.

Kidepo is Uganda’s most isolated national park and also the most magnificent, for Kidepo ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses. From Apoka in the heart of the park, a savannah landscape extends far beyond the gazetted area, towards horizons outlined by distant mountain ranges.

The local communities around the park include pastoral Karamojong people, similar to the Maasai of Kenya, and the IK, a hunter-gatherer tribe.

The park contains one of the most exciting faunas of any Ugandan national park. Along with the neighboring Karamoja region, it houses many species found nowhere else in Uganda, including the greater and lesser kudu, eland and cheetah. Carnivores here include the lion, leopard, spotted hyena and black-backed and side-striped jackals. Other large species regularly seen here are elephant, Burchell’s zebra, bushpig, warthog, Rothschild’s giraffe, Cape buffalo, bushbuck, bush duiker, Defassa waterbuck, Bohor reedbuck, Jackson’s hartebeest and Oribi.

The park boasts an extensive bird list of around 475 species, making it second only in Uganda to Queen Elizabeth National Park. A few species of note are the Ostrich, Kori Bustard and Karamoja Apalis.

Kidepo is notable for its birds of prey. Of the 56 species recorded, 14 – including Verreaux’s Eagle, Egyptian Vulture and Pygmy Falcon – are believed to be endemic to the Kidepo and Karamoja region. There has, however, been no comprehensive survey of birds in Kidepo and visitors stand a good chance of adding to the current list.

Access: Schedule Eagle Air flight once a week and charter flights, civil aviation manages an airstrip 3km away from the park headquarters.

The main livelihood for the Karamojong is cattle herding and livestock have a significant importance in the day to day lives of a Karamojong community. Apoka Lodge has established a good relationship with a nearby Karamojong community and the opportunity is there to visit the village and learn about this history of this interesting community and its culture and traditions.

Kidepo Savannah Lodge

On the edge of one of the most beautiful National Parks in Uganda...

This  remote property, Kidepo Savannah Lodge does justice to this wildlife gem which has received several international awards as one of the greatest Parks of Africa.

Being just 500 mt away from Kalokudo gate, the lodge is literally on a stone's throw from the Park. It offers  unparalled vistas of the expansive Narus Valley, Mount Morungole and the distant mountain ranges which form the border with Southern Sudan.

The lodge is inspired by the savannah surroundings, the grasslands, rocky outcrops, and ... by the karamajong, the tribe with their typical manyattas and colorful blankets.  The lodge had to blend in rater than stick out, so we opted for a choice between the more luxurious self contained safari tents and comfortable lazy camping tents.
